The city of Long Beach is committed to meeting the needs of its senior community. Construction of the Beacon Apartments in June will bring 160 affordable housing units specifically for lower-income seniors and veterans in Long Beach. The Beacon Apartments are yet another source of affordable housing coming to Long Beach. As our elder law attorneys understand, this development will provide great opportunities for the senior community in Long Beach.
A huge groundbreaking in progress
In total, there are about 640 units of affordable housing, which have been in various stages of development since March. Those units include several that are ready to break ground and many that are currently being rehabilitated. The purpose of the properties is to providing housing options for a number of populations, including seniors, veterans, individuals with special needs, and homelessness individuals or those at risk of becoming homelessness.
Various other developments planned
The proposed Pacific Apartments, located on Long Beach Blvd., will provide 101 affordable housing units designed particularly for families with special needs. This development is adjacent to the Metro Blue Line light rail. It will offer, among other things, a community room with a kitchen, laundry facilities, an outdoor courtyard and play area for children.
Also located on Long Beach Blvd., The Spark at Midtown will offer a mixed-use development. Half of the new units will be reserved for individuals who are either homelessness or at risk of becoming homelessness. The rest of the units will be designed for families.
Legal issues Los Angeles elder law attorneys handle
As with every legal specialty, there are a few common legal issues that are commonly handled by elder law attorneys. The most common legal matters include Medicaid planning, estate planning and administration, conservatorships, and trust formation and administration.
Elder law issues require professional advice
Some clients believe they can handle certain legal matters on their own, such as drafting a will or power of attorney. If you are considering substituting the advice of a professional with an online do-it-yourself product, you need to first understand the risks. Your Los Angeles elder law attorneys can tell you that the false sense of security do-it-yourself products provide can be dangerous.
Estate planning is not one size fits all
Estate planning, especially for elders, is not “one size fits all” endeavor. Therefore, it is wise to work with an elder law attorney with experience and knowledge regarding your particular situation. Your Los Angeles elder law attorney will be knowledgeable of California’s laws regarding various elder law issues and they will be skilled in drafting wills, trusts, and other estate planning tools. Without their skill and experience, you and your family may encounter many unnecessary challenges in the future.
Common elder law services we provide
Elder law involves estate planning, which is basically creating a plan in advance for how you want your assets to be distributed after you die. Comprehensive estate planning for elders may include instructions for your care if you become disabled, identifying a guardian and manager for the inheritance of minor children, provisions for family members with special needs, provisions for loved ones who may be unable to manage their own affairs, life insurance, disability income insurance, and long-term care insurance, and plans for transferring your business at your retirement, disability or death.
Be sure to review and update your plan
Once your plan has been established, it needs to be reviewed and updated as your family and financial situations change throughout your lifetime. Even if you believe you may not be able to afford a complex estate plan, you can always start with something simpler. As your needs change and your financial situation improves, you can expand your plan as necessary.
Understanding the common myths about the elderly
Another important aspect of being an elder law attorney is recognizing the myths from the facts when it comes to seniors. There are so many myths circulating out there regarding the elderly and their competency in general. It takes wisdom and knowledge to be able to recognize the real physical and mental challenges that seniors often face, as opposed to the fallacies that society may perpetuate. It is also important to recognize the importance of maintaining as much freedom and autonomy for seniors as possible.
