Every November, we celebrate National Caregiver’s Month in the United States by recognizing and supporting caregivers who provide vital care to loved ones. In California, a state with a large aging population and a high number of people who require care, National Caregiver Month takes on added importance. Caregivers often face emotional, physical, and financial challenges while providing care, and National Caregiver’s Month aims to bring awareness to their needs, while also offering support and resources. With that in mind, the Los Angeles attorneys at Schomer Estate & Wealth Advisors urge you to join us in celebrating National Caregiver’s Month in California.
Ideas for Taking Part in National Caregiver’s Month in California
According to the National Council on Aging (NCOA), more than 53 million family caregivers provide unpaid care, providing more than $470 billion in unpaid care each year. These unpaid caregivers deserve our recognition and gratitude on a daily basis; however, National Caregiver’s Month offers a chance to honor caregivers on a national level, raise awareness about the issues caregivers face, educate individuals and communities, and increase support and resources for our nation’s caregivers. There are numerous ways to get involved in National Caregiver’s Month, including:
- Participating in Events and Webinars: Numerous organizations throughout California host events, workshops, and webinars to support and educate caregivers in November, including the Family Caregiver Alliance, California Caregiver Resource Centers, the Arc California, and AARP California often offer free or low-cost virtual workshops where you can gain valuable information, connect with other caregivers, and learn about resources available to you in your local community.
- Volunteer for Caregiver Support Programs: Another meaningful way to get involved during National Caregiver’s Month is by volunteering given that many organizations in California offer programs that rely on volunteers to provide support to caregivers. Respite care, for example, involves volunteers who spend time with care recipients to give caregivers a much-needed break. Contact California’s Area Agency on Aging to find opportunities in your area.
- Raise Awareness on Social Media: If you are unable to participate in events or volunteer, you can still play a vital role in raising awareness for National Caregiver’s Month by using social media to spread the word and connect with others who understand the valuable role caregivers play in the lives of individuals and families. Many national and local organizations use hashtags like #NationalCaregiversMonth, #CaregiverSupport, or #ThankACaregiver to promote awareness on platforms like X, Facebook, and Instagram.
- Access Support Services and Resources: If you are a caregiver in California, National Caregiver’s Month is an ideal time to explore the resources and services available to you. Caregivers often feel isolated; however, there are many programs designed to support caregivers emotionally, physically, and financially. For example, the California Caregiver Resource Centers offer free services such as counseling, training, legal and financial consultation, and respite care to caregivers across the state. Alzheimer’s Los Angeles also provides tailored support for caregivers who are caring for loved ones with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
- Connect with Local Caregiver Support Groups: Caregiver support groups can provide an emotional lifeline for those who feel overwhelmed by their caregiving duties, providing a safe space for you to share your experiences, seek advice, and connect with others who understand the emotional toll caregiving can take.
