Attorney Megan E. Waugh of the Schomer Law Group represented private conservator Linda Cotterman, a private professional fiduciary, in what is believed to be the most valuable Los Angeles County probate auction ever. Originally appraised by the probate referee at $8.45 million, the Beverly Hills property went to auction with an accepted bid of $9.47 million and ultimately overbid and sold to the successful buyers at an astonishing $16.2 million. Aitan Segal of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties represented conservator Linda Cotterman as the listing agent for the sale. Scott P. Schomer, founder of the Schomer Law Group, stated: “Mrs. Cotterman and Mr. Segal did an amazing marketing the property and Ms. Waugh deftly handled the complex probate sale process. Conservatee Lillian Portnoy is very fortunate to have Mrs. Cotterman and her team of professionals protecting Ms. Portnoy’s interests.”
As reported by the Los Angeles Times, the sale of Ms. Portnoy’s famous residence was highly anticipated: “The home became a gathering spot for friends and Hollywood stars over the years. Sean Connery, Jose Ferrer, Charlie Chaplin Jr. and Jean Ron Getty were among Portnoy’s guests. Her former beau, Elvis Presley, also visited the property on a number of occasions, often using the swimming pool.”
Ms. Waugh’s practice centers around conservatorships, elder law, probate, wills, and trusts. Ms. Waugh was selected as a 2016 California Super Lawyers Rising Star for probate and trust litigation. Each year, no more than 2.5 percent of the lawyers in the state are selected by Super Lawyers to receive this honor.
